About my2frontteeth
Since launching the site, the question I’m most commonly
asked is ‘How do you make any money out of it?’. Here’s some
background information on how we work.
What is the ethos behind my2frontteeth.co.uk?
My 2frontteeth.co.uk is an offshoot of FUNdamentals.
Fundamentals was set up in 2004 by Dr. Amanda Gummer with
the aim of improving the chances of children developing into
happy, healthy, well-balanced adults. Fundamentals has a
number of divisions, the first of which was research for toy
companies. It is on the back of this research that Amanda
realised that there are a lot of great products there are
for children, but also that there is quite a lot of rubbish
too. Most products fall somewhere in between and are neither
the best or worst toy, but they are not made the most of
(e.g. because they are marketed at the wrong age group). The
marketing agencies do such a great job that it is difficult
to tell the difference between what will be a 5 minute
wonder or a firm favourite. This site should help cut
through the marketing hype and will only recommend products
which are developmentally appropriate for the age group as
well as being enjoyable and fun to use. We are not only
interested in toys and games, but will also recommend
outings, charitable donations and membership subscriptions
should we feel that they would be beneficial to the child.
The most important thing to understand is that
My2frontteeth.co.uk has no advertising and the basic present
advice is completely free. As there are no corporate
paymasters, everything that is written is unbiased,
objective and free of outside influence. Anything that is on
the site is here because it helps people make good decisions
about products they buy for children.
How does the site make money?
The first month was treated as a non-revenue-generating
pilot study to make sure that when we did start properly,
the site was exactly as we wanted it. With feedback from the
pilot study, we realised that the demand for the service was
huge and we need to be able to offer people a more complete
service so we will soon be introducing the ‘buy, wrap and
send’ service as well as a more detailed present advice
service. Both of these will be charged for as they take a
significant amount of time.
Suggestions are made purely from a ‘what are the best
products for this child?’ stance, and revenue generation is
simply not considered. Once recommendations are made one of
the team has the job of seeing if an 'affiliate link' to the
retailer can be found, to replace the normal link. Affiliate
links are links which generate revenue if they're clicked.
For example we have an affiliate link to www.mailorderexpress.com so we get a percentage of the
profit from the products consumers buy when using the link.
It is likely that the products are available from other
online retailers and in the high street, but as we can’t
list everyone, we list those with whom we have an affiliate
arrangement. There is nothing to stop you from taking our
advice and going to shop for it elsewhere.
There are also products that are only available from outlets
with whom we have no affiliate arrangement, but that won’t
stop us from recommending them.
If a link is affiliated, it has a * by it. The affiliate
agreements work in a variety of ways. They can be a payment
per click, per user, per purchase, or a combination of them
all.
The other way in which the site generates revenue is by
providing evaluation reports for suppliers of children’s
products. Companies are welcome to send us products which we
will review. If we like them, we will bear them in mind for
recommendations. Companies can then purchase a copy of the
evaluation report. Samples sent to us are donated to local
schools and charities. We also spend a lot of time carrying
out our own evaluation and so we recommend products from as
wide a range of suppliers as possible.
Disclaimer:
FUNdamentals is not responsible for the safety of any
product recommendation received via the my2frontteeth
website. All products should be carefully checked for faults
and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Data Protection:
No personal details will be passed on to any third party.
There is the option on the recommendation email for the
address to be added to a distribution list for future
advertising and research purposes. At any date subsequent to
this, the email address will be deleted from the list on
receipt of an email requesting as such sent to
remove@my2frontteeth.co.uk.
Telephone numbers are only stored until the request has been
completed and are only used in case of email failure.
Children’s names are never requested and if provided would
be immediately deleted from any correspondence.
